At Scotch Plains–Fanwood High School, SMAC advisor Marc Fabiano is the behind-the-scenes powerhouse keeping our movement running like a compassion-fueled machine. With a SMAC connection that goes back over twenty years, Marc shows up with both heart and know-how, pushing students to dream bigger, lead louder, and make real change for cancer awareness. He’s proof that when educators champion student voices and meaningful causes, incredible things happen—and SPFHS is lucky to have him.

How and why did you get involved with SMAC at SPFHS?

I first got involved with SMAC in 2002 after seeing the students and community come together for a student who was battling cancer. I then became the advisor of SMAC in 2023 because I wanted to continue to be part of something that not only raised awareness for an important cause but also gave students a platform to make a real difference.

I was motivated by the opportunity to help students use their leadership skills for a meaningful cause. Cancer has touched so many lives, and I wanted to support a group that channels compassion into action. I was immediately impressed by their maturity, organization, and genuine passion for helping others. They were driven to do good, not for recognition, but because they cared.

How have you seen students grow — personally or professionally — through their involvement with SMAC?

Their initiative and creativity stand out the most. They constantly come up with new ideas to raise awareness and funds, and they take ownership of every project from start to finish.

Many students develop confidence and strong leadership skills. They learn how to plan events, speak publicly, and work as a team, all while understanding the importance of empathy and community service.

How has SMAC made a difference within your school or local community?

SMAC has united our school around a cause that touches everyone in some way. It’s created a sense of purpose and connection beyond academics and athletics. Our annual fundraiser is always special, but seeing the entire school and community come together in support of cancer awareness is incredibly powerful. Watching students lead those moments is truly inspiring.

How has advising a SMAC chapter influenced you as an educator or leader?

I love watching students take ownership of something meaningful. Seeing their excitement as an idea turns into a successful event is one of the best parts of being an educator. Being the SMAC advisor reminds me how powerful student-driven initiatives can be. It’s made me a more supportive, collaborative educator and reinforced the importance of empowering young people to lead.

Why do you think SMAC is such a special organization for students and for schools?

SMAC teaches compassion, leadership, and teamwork while giving students a chance to make an impact. It strengthens both the school culture and the community as a whole.

Advisors like Mr. Fabiano drive our movement forward!
