Meet Emma, a junior at Governor Livingston High School and a dedicated member of SMAC who’s channeling her energy into fundraising, awareness, and community impact. From bake sales to launching a cancer awareness booth for Fannywood Day, Emma is showing what it means to be a student leader in action.
Tell us about your involvement in your school's SMAC chapter...
I have been a part of the SMAC club at my school for two years now, and I have been an active member. I have participated in bake sales, chocolate bar sales, and even an outside of school internship, all to raise money for cancer. I recently joined SMAC last year for a few reasons. I noticed how much awareness they brought to cancer the year prior, and I wanted to be a part of the cause. I also wanted to be a part of a community whose main goal was to help people in need. Ever since I joined SMAC, I felt like I was able to leave a positive lasting impact on my community.
Why should other students get involved in SMAC?
SMAC is an amazing program to be involved in and I encourage those of you who have a SMAC chapter at your own school to join it. It’s an important club that you should participate as much as you can in because every activity that you do is for the good of the community.
What was your favorite SMAC activity thus far?
My favorite activity that I have done for the SMAC community is my internship. My friend from my SMAC chapter and I began a project to raise money and awareness for cancer. We have been planning a cancer booth for Fannywood Day, a fair in Fanwood, NJ, where we will have information about cancer, activities, and a tribute wall. In honor of September being Pediatric Cancer Awareness month, we are hoping to receive a lot of donations to donate to the Pediatric Cancer Foundation.
Students like Emma drive our movement forward!
